September 14th, 2020: Famous Fridays Blog Post - Sunita Williams


Sunita L. Williams was a US Navy Captain, and is a NASA astronaut. She is of Indian and Slovanian descent, and was the second American astronaut of Indian heritage to go into space. She attended the US Naval Academy for her Bachelor of Science in Physical Science and Florida Institute of Technology for her Master of Science in Engineering Management. In 1998 she was elected as an astronaut by NASA. Since then she has gone on 2 space missions, Expeditions 14/15 and 32/33, spent a total of 322 days in space, ranks sixth on the U.S. endurance list, and second for a female astronaut. She’s been presented with the Legion of Merit, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and Humanitarian Service Medal. She is currently training for the first post-certification mission of Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft and her third long duration mission aboard the International Space Station. In her personal life, Sunil enjoys hanging out with her dogs, working out, working on houses, working on cars, working on airplanes, hiking and camping. She is an excellent role model of women and BIPOC in the STEM field!
